Understand why two games with similar theoretical return can produce very different short-term experiences.

What is actually happening?

Return describes a long-run model; volatility describes dispersion. A higher-variance profile concentrates more value in less frequent outcomes.

Presentation can make a simple rule feel like a story with momentum, skill or unfinished business. Strip the sequence back to entry condition, cost, event, reset and outcome. Those five parts are enough to expose most misleading interpretations.

The common mistake

People often use a visible feature as a shortcut for an invisible probability. A meter, large multiplier or long animation is easy to observe; the full outcome distribution is not. The interface therefore receives more weight than the evidence deserves.

Do this once

Match the distribution to loss tolerance and session budget, not to a desire to recover previous losses.

What counts as evidence?

Prefer a current rule file, certified configuration or regulator statement. Provider copy can explain intended behaviour but should not be stretched into a claim about frequency, consumer safety or Australian legality. A personal session is an observation, not a statistical validation.

See the pattern in context

Legacy of Dead uses this mechanic as a useful case study. Each card marks what is confirmed, claimed and unknown.
